Many people do not know that a serving of seafood can be available for under $1 and up. This trend is evident since only 1 in 10 Americans eat seafood regularly. It’s heartbreaking to see some leaders in our nation attempt to remove seafood from SNAP and WIC benefits as it is recommended in our USDA HHS Dietary Guidelines for Americans to eat at least two servings of seafood per week for optimum health.
In our nutrition program Eating Heart Healthy, we see firsthand the desire from our underserved participants to feed their families nutritious and healthy meals. Many participants struggle to find inexpensive ways to incorporate healthy meals into their diets and budgets. With nutrition education, strategies to stretch their food dollars and recipes that average $10 to feed a family of four, our participants are now empowered to eat nutritiously with seafood at least twice a week. Many participants report feeling much better and with more energy after eating healthy meals for a few weeks.
This #Spoontember, we are doing our part in building awareness of the essential benefits of eating seafood. Eating seafood at least twice a week has been shown to reduce the risk of dying from heart disease by 36%, improve baby brain development, and help older adults live longer and healthier. Please help us by taking the Healthy Heart Pledge and consider donating seafood to your local food bank.
